Delivering surplus food for social good
Community Shop is a new Community Interest Company which will help ensure that cheap food reaches people who may need a helping hand to achieve financial independence.
By redistributing surpluses that exist in the food supply chain, Community Shop, with the support of its parent company, Company Shop, can help people on the cusp of food poverty gain access to good, wholesome food at up to 70% less than normal retail prices.
Similar models are already working well in Europe in the form of 'Social Supermarkets', and Community Shop is bringing this concept to the UK for the first time.
Our first members' only store, in Goldthorpe, Barnsley, is the pilot and will be used to test the model before a national roll-out in 2014.
Not only will Community Shop offer a range of products at significantly reduced prices, but it will also provide an interactive programme of wider support available free of charge in the Community Hub from budgeting and debt advice to cookery classes.
Community Shop are able to offer savings of up to 70% off normal retail prices by selling surplus products that the larger retailers and brands can't use.
Surpluses can be caused by a whole host of reasons, from seasonal forecasting issues and labelling errors to a short shelf-life and many other things. Importantly though, unless they are redistributed, these surpluses would end up in landfill.
We step in to prevent that from happening, ensuring that perfectly edible products are consumed by people who need them - our members. The money we make from sales is then invested into our stores and the support services we offer. For more information on how to become a member click here>

If you think you qualify, becoming a member of Community Shop is easy. All you have to do is bring something that tells us where you live [like a utility bill], something official with your signature on [like a bank card] and proof of the benefits you receive, to the Goldthorpe local library next door to the shop, on the member sign up days. A member of the team will tell you all about the initiative and help you complete the registration process. more info>
