Welcome to Community Shop: More than just food

Community Shop is a social enterprise that is empowering individuals and building stronger communities, by realising the social potential of surplus food.

Members of Community Shop can shop for good food at great prices – easing pressure on family budgets – but also gain access to professional, personal development programmes, to kick-start positive change in their own lives.

From inspiring motivation and confidence in our members, to improving health and economic outcomes for their families, the impact of Community Shop is already being felt way beyond the aisles of the store.

Community Shop is an initiative from Company Shop – the UK’s largest re distributor of surplus food.

How -does -it -work

Community Shop are able to offer savings of up to 70% off normal retail prices by selling surplus products that the larger retailers and brands can't use.

Surpluses can be caused by a whole host of reasons, from seasonal forecasting issues and labelling errors to a short shelf-life and many other things. Importantly though, unless they are redistributed, these surpluses would end up in landfill.

Surplus -stock

We step in to prevent that from happening, ensuring that perfectly edible products are consumed by people who need them - our members. The money we make from sales is then invested into our stores and the support services we offer. For more information on how to become a member click here>

Who -is -it -for

Community Shop is available to those living in a particular catchment area and in receipt of certain types of income support. To be a member at Community Shops you need to be:

  • Resident in a household where someone receives income support
  • Reside within the catchment area of your local Community Shop
  • Motivated to make a positive change in your life

Update: June 2014

Thanks to the overwhelming number of membership applications Community Shop in Goldthorpe has received since its opening in December 2013, we have placed a hold on further registration events at the present time

Community Shop has limited membership of its pilot store to 500 people. This is to maximise the impact we can achieve for our members through our Community Hub tailored support programme.

Membership of Community Shop is reviewed every six months, when we hope we will be able to open up opportunities for people to benefit from joining us.

We will post details of registration opportunities in due course. more info>

Thank you for your continued interest.
